Stages of Homelessness:
Attempt at Reintegration, Regression, Resignation
While pathways explain how people enter homelessness, the concept of stages of homelessness focuses on how the experience evolves psychologically and socially over time.
Earlier Central European literature describes three stages that may occur when homelessness becomes prolonged: 1. Attempt at reintegration, 2. Regression, 3. Resignation
Although homelessness is not always linear, these stages help professionals recognise shifts in motivation, coping capacity and psychological resilience.
In the early phase, individuals typically attempt to regain stability.
Individuals may:
Actively search for employment
Contact family members
Seek housing options
Engage with support services
Motivation is still present. The individual often perceives homelessness as temporary and believes reintegration is achievable.
This stage represents a critical window for intervention. Timely, coordinated support can prevent progression into more entrenched forms of homelessness.
