4. De-escalation and Conflict Management
Trauma and neurobiological dysregulation increase emotional reactivity.
When a client becomes agitated:
Lower your voice
Reduce stimulation
Avoid sudden movements
Offer choice
Acknowledge emotion
Avoid power struggles
Example:
“I can see this feels overwhelming. Let's slow down for a moment.”
De-escalation protects:
Worker safety
Client dignity
Therapeutic alliance
It prevents fragmentation caused by conflict-driven disengagement.
It operationalises: Trust-Based and Trauma-Informed Practice — and supports Low-Barrier and Equitable Access.
