4. Complex Trauma and Emotional Regulation
Many individuals experiencing homelessness meet criteria for complex trauma (C-PTSD), especially those with long-term exposure to abuse, neglect, or instability beginning in childhood.
Clinical manifestations may include:
Emotional dysregulation
Persistent shame
Interpersonal mistrust
Identity disturbance
Somatic complaints
Difficulty tolerating uncertainty
When combined with unstable housing, these symptoms intensify.
For example:
A crowded shelter may trigger hyperarousal.
Loud environments may provoke panic.
Authority figures may trigger trauma responses.
Understanding this context transforms clinical interpretation.
