Housing as a Determinant of Health
Housing is not merely a physical structure. It is a foundational social determinant of health. Stable housing provides the conditions necessary for physical safety, psychological security, and social participation.
The World Health Organization identifies housing as one of the key social determinants shaping health outcomes. Health is influenced not only by medical care, but by the physical, social and economic environments in which people live.

HOUSING INFLUENCES HEALTH THROUGH MATERIAL CONDITIONS SUCH AS:

Heating and temperature control

Ventilation and indoor air quality

Access to clean water and sanitation

Adequate space and hygiene facilities

POOR HOUSING CONDITIONS INCREASE RISK OF:

Respiratory diseases

Cardiovascular strain (extreme cold/heat)

Infectious disease transmission

Injuries

Sleep disturbances

Overcrowding and inadequate sanitation significantly elevate infectious risk.
Homelessness represents the most extreme form of housing deprivation.
