At the beginning of this module, you will learn how to apply integrated health and social care (IHSC) principles in situations where complexity is not the exception, but the norm. You will explore how mental health, addiction, trauma, and chronic physical illness intersect in real-life contexts—especially in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.
You will realize that clinical reality often resists simplified solutions. Standard protocols may fall short when individuals present with multimorbidity, trauma histories, and unstable living conditions. This module will help you understand that effective care in such contexts requires not only knowledge, but also adaptability, relational skills, and ethical sensitivity.
YOU WILL DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO

apply Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) principles in everyday clinical encounters,

use motivational interviewing techniques (including OARS and scaling) to support engagement and change,

integrate harm reduction approaches within coordinated care,

respond to co-occurring mental and physical health conditions within an IHSC framework,

manage de-escalation in challenging interactions,

and critically analyse ethical dilemmas that arise in complex care situations.

Through the Integrated Case Lab, you will work with realistic scenarios (Alex, Jana, Peter), allowing you to operationalise IHSC principles in practice. The Sparring section will further challenge you to think about integration under real-world constraints—where resources are limited, and decisions are rarely straightforward.

Ultimately, this module invites you to reflect:

What does truly integrated care look like when complexity cannot be reduced—and how do I respond in those moments?
