Broader Forms of Social Integration
Social integration extends beyond employment.
For people with long histories of homelessness, integration may involve:

Rebuilding social relationships

Community participation

Volunteering

Peer support roles

Engagement in cultural or educational activities

Civic participation

Reconnection with family

Meaningful participation can restore dignity and belonging even when formal employment is not achievable.
Peer programmes
Peer involvement programmes, where individuals with lived experience contribute to service design or support others, represent powerful integration pathways.
Community
Similarly, involvement in local NGOs, community groups or faith-based organisations can rebuild social capital.
Integration must therefore be person-centred and realistic.
An exclusive focus on employment risks marginalising those whose health limitations restrict labour market participation.
